Close-up and personal with the Little Spiderhunter

 When a bird is born at the park, it tends to be more friendly.  Being born free at the park and enjoying the fruits, nectar, insects, clean  air and safe access on daily basis makes the Kambatik nature reserve home to the Little Spiderhunter.  They own the park and are seen at daybreak till sunset.  Their delightful twittering are music for nature lovers.  With proper planting specifications more will be attracted to make their appearances at the heliconia and ixora plants.  These birds really need human agency to help their generations multiply.  The park is just a start....

Photoshoot session with the Plantain Squirrel

 December is a time for less fruits.  The constant rains since November normally do not allow for enough heat to help out with the ripening or flowering process.  This is the cyclical phenomena faced by oil palm cultivators on the island of Borneo, despite having  the equator situated above the island. The plantain squirrel will grab whatever ripe fruits available before the night falls.  It was a surprise photoshoot session this late afternoon.  The squirrel did not notice by presence and gave me the golden opportunity to come close and personal with the cute little model.  Here's more shots of the unaware model in action.....

Great Mormon ( Papilio memnon)

Had a most interesting time photoshooting the Great Mormon butterfly today.  It is a large butterfy with exotic colours in deep ink-blue, stripes and dots included.  It was having a joyous time at the yellow ixora shrub, obviously trying to have a morning sip of its nectar.  It doesn't often drop by at the park and today's photoshoot session was an opportunity not to be missed.  Below are some more delightful captures....

Today's photoshoot session with the Malay Lacewing was not arranged.  No appointment made.  But was a pleasant surprise when I encountered it at the 'Sui-Mui' plant (Wrightia religiosa).  The dangling flowers of the Sui-Mui (Cantonese) are fragrant and are produced on daily basis.  There have been many occasions when I encountered it hovering around by the plant.  The variegated lace pattern on the underside of the wings are very attractive.  The upper side is bright orange and black.

Photoshooting the Eastern Crimson Sunbird

Eastern Crimson Sunbird - Kelicap Sepah Raja (Malay) at the Chinese Hat Plant (Holmskioldia sanguinea)

 The Eastern Crimson Sunbird lives in the forest area of the park.  Everyday it would come out of the forest cover to the open garden areas of the park.  Searching for nectar at the Chinese Hat Plant (Holmskioldia sanguinea) and the many varieties of Heliconias seems to be its hobby.  Today it decided to hangout at the Chinese Hat Plant giving me an exclusive photoshoot session.  On close-up its interesting to note its dark-blue forehead and forecrown.  The most colourful part of the bird is the red colour of its head to back.  As is practically known it is the male of the species that has the crimson colour.

Hill Myna (Gracula religiosa)

 It is such an adorable bird. The Hill Myna or Tiong (Malay) was around yesterday.  She was dressed completely in black, with pretty orange legs and feet.  Her strong bill was reddish orange with a yellow tip.  She gave me a rare opportunity to come closer to her for a photoshoot session.  Close enough for me to notice her face in details.  Her eyes were black.  Below her eyes hangs a yellow bare skin patch.  A bigger patch runs around her nape to which two roundish lappets are attached.  I saw her preening herself on one of the perches at the Licuala Hill.  She whistled loudly and could be heard over the neighbourhood.  She's has been  a real sport .  Here are the photoshoots taken at a distance of about 15 meters...

A Photoshoot session - Spiderhunter at Sexy Pink

Little Spiderhunter at the Heliconia 'Sexy Pink'

 One of the most rewarding birding look-out point at the park is the Heliconia point.  At most times of the day the place is visited by many small birds like the Little Spiderhunter, Brown-throated Sunbird and the Eastern Crimson Sunbird due to the presence of many varieties of heliconia plants and yellow ixora shrub there.  Today the Little Spiderhunter was seen in a happy mood getting her job done.  It was busy getting deep into the bottom of the flower base to have a sip of the nectar.  The pendulous flower stalk is red and the pink bracts that cover the real flower are sometimes called 'false flowers'.

 The tiny Brown-throated Sunbird was a bundle of joy when it showed itself this morning.  It was continuously making calls but I did not see any female of the species coming close to it.   It is a very colourful bird here with colours all over the top half of the body.   What is most interesting is to watch the metallic blue colours of its upper parts and the brownish throat.  Below are more pictures from today's photoshoot session...
